Damon Bailey has resigned as coach of the Bedford North Lawrence
boys' basketball team. Bailey, after two mediocre seasons in one of the toughest coaching jobs in the state, notified
the athletic department Wednesday of his decision.
Bailey informed his players that he would not be returning next season in the locker
room following a blowout loss in the Seymour sectional to the host Owls. HoosierAuthority.com was the first to break
the story.
“I took the job with the idea that I would do this for a few years and try to solidify
some things and get some things going and then turn it over to Jason (Speer) who has been there as a JV coach and the last
couple of years under me,” Bailey told the Times-Mail. “I probably had hoped and planned, maybe, that it would
have been a little longer than two years but never had aspirations of it being a seven to 10-year deal.”
Bailey hopes Jason Speer, a man who was offered a head coaching job at Bloomington
North two years ago, will get the job. Speer is also a popular choice with the players. Other names swirling around the program
are BNL girls head coach Kurt Godlevske, Orleans head coach Tom Bradley, and, for name recognition, former BNL coaches Danny
Bush and Mark Ryan. Bush coached Bailey in the late 80's when both were at BNL.
What's next for the one of the state's legends? Damon will return to running
his successful warehouse business, and will return to coaching his daughter's 5th grade AAU squad. A rumor
surfaced about Bailey taking another coaching job throughout the state, but so far these have held no substance.
